How to Organize an Epic Made Simple

Next week, I will be teaching a class on how to define and organize the epic fantasy subgenre.
It will be packed with information about the genre in particular but also give some clues on how the subplots and character arcs are used to support the overarching plot or meta plot.
In my quest to organize and present helpful information, I noticed that there was not a simple graphic available that showed how these plots are framed together.

So, with my limited experience, I built a graphic for this purpose. I used Lord of the Rings as an example, because it is so well known, it is classically organized as an epic, and I am a huge fan.

You are welcome to use the graphic for your own purpose. I am happy to share it. If you want more information about how this genre is crafted and supported by those multiple subplots and characters feel free to join us on Tuesday at 6:30 MST. It is a free presentation, sponsored by the Idaho Writers Guild. You do not have to be a member to attend.

Hope to see you there.
